Kingdom Fungi delves into the extraordinary world of fungi, following four dedicated amateur and professional field mycologists whose work is driven by a shared mission to document, educate and protect this remarkable kingdom.
Set across diverse and changing habitats in Southern England, this fungi documentary reveals the science of identification, the ecological processes unfolding beneath our feet, global environmental policy, and the personal stories that drive each character’s devotion.
The journey extends internationally—following a botanical artist exhibiting at the Reino Fungi Festival in Chile, with insight from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and endorsement from the Fungi Foundation. The film also takes us on a special fungi photography expedition to the Himalayan foothills, guided by the National Mushroom Centre, to explore the largely undocumented species of the temperate rainforests of Bhutan and in search of new-to-science species

Meet the
mycologists

01
Jasper Sharp
Jasper Sharp is a writer and filmmaker with a fascination for fungi, slime moulds, and the more obscure parts of our woodland ecosystems. As well as writing several books on Japanese cinema, he is the co-director of the award-winning feature-length documentary on slime moulds, The Creeping Garden, alongside Tim Grabham, and the author of the tie-in book publication.
Jasper takes us on a foray through various British habitats in search of unique fungi and slime moulds which would otherwise go unnoticed to the regular passerby. His deep understanding of fungal processes provide insight into what role they play within ecosystems and how introducing non-native species into new environments can have devastating consequences.

02
Jana 'Nikki' Nicole
Jana Nicole, Co-founder and Artistic Director of the All Things Fungi Festival, is an internationally acclaimed, award-winning artist celebrated for her evocative body of work exploring the delicate interconnections between the kingdom of fungi and the surrounding flora and fauna. She made history as the first woman and first non-French recipient to be awarded the prestigious title of Prix Puvis de Chavannes, honouring her ground-breaking contributions to contemporary art.
With her background in the arts her approach to working with and understanding fungi is very different to Jasper, Max & Andy. Nikki teaches us how creativity and expression through botanical art can create new connections throughout communities - much like the fungal connections made through the mycelium network.

03
Andy Overall
Andy has had a fascinating journey from pop stardom back through to nature when he became interested in mushrooms back in the early 1990’s. Growing up as a boy during the 60’s he nurtured an interest in nature…And then along came punk and David Bowie’s and everything changed course for a while! Later in life his rekindled interest in fungi evolved into obsession as he began to see an infinite variety of fungal species appearing before him and he wanted to get to know them all. Since his obsession began, Andy has published magazines, countless articles and in 2017 his first book all about fungi - “FUNGI-Mushrooms & Toadstools of Parks, Gardens, Heaths and Woodlands”.
He is the fungi recorder for the London Natural History Society and a Group Leader in the London Fungus Group

04
Max Mudie
Max is the Co founder of All Things fungi festival, His lens has been focused on fungi and myxomycetes for some time now. His imagery, posted mainly on Instagram @allthingsfungi has gained him recognition with international platforms and magazines. His deep dive into mycology means he's found and identified hundreds of species, he's contributed to the Darwins tree of life project at Kew Gardens and is an active member of the Sussex Fungus group. He has been commissioned for the second year running to document the species and teach Macro Photography at the Royal Parks in London. He is also 1/3 of Petrichor, a not-for-profit delivering nature-based education & nature connection for mental and physical health.
Max's journey in the film takes an unexpected turn when he swaps British woodlands for the Bhutanese foothills of the Himalayas in search of new species with the NMC.
